{"id":10621,"date":"2014-12-04T22:39:48","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T22:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.premisehealth.com\/?p=451"},"modified":"2014-12-04T22:39:48","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T22:39:48","slug":"usaas-health-services-center-named-provider-americas-valuable-care","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.premisehealth.com\/resources\/news\/usaas-health-services-center-named-provider-americas-valuable-care\/","title":{"rendered":"USAA\u2019s Health Services Center named a provider of America\u2019s most valuable care"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"block block--freeform\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<h6>Groundbreaking Study Includes USAA Health Services on List of 11 Exemplary Primary Care Practices Providing Higher-Quality Patient Care at Lower-Than-Average Total Annual Cost<\/h6>\n<p>San Antonio, TX \u2013 A new nationwide analysis shows that USAA Health Services has been identified as delivering significantly higher-quality care\u2014at a substantially lower cost\u2014than nearly all of its peers across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were announced today by the newly-established Peterson Center on Healthcare, which funded the research conducted by Stanford University\u2019s Clinical Excellence Research Center. Researchers looked for primary care practices that performed in the top 25 percent on nationally-recognized measures of quality, and the lowest 25 percent on healthcare costs per patient. Of 15,000 primary care practices considered, just 5 percent met these criteria. Of these, researchers conducted in-depth site visits to a sample of the highest performing sites, including USAA Health Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. healthcare system is the most expensive in the world, but patient outcomes are often worse than many other nations,\u201d said Jeffrey D. Selberg, executive director of the Peterson Center on Healthcare. \u201cInnovative primary care practices in communities across America illustrate that there are bright spots in the system. There are healthcare providers in communities large and small who are consistently delivering high-quality care at a lower-than-average total cost. If we replicated what these providers are doing on a national scale, America would have one of the world\u2019s highest-performing healthcare systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers observed that these high-performing primary care practices are distinguished in three distinct ways from practices with average costs and quality scores: their relationships with patients are deeper; their interactions with others in the local healthcare system are more coordinated; and their practices are organized to foster teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding orders allow us to effectively treat our patients\u2019 symptoms and get them back to work quickly.\u00a0For example, if a patient comes in to the onsite health center with sinus symptoms, they could have allergies, but the symptoms may also meet the criteria for strep throat,\u201d said Donna Garcia, NP, USAA Health Services. \u201cThere is a standing order in place to run a rapid strep test. If the test is positive, we can then get them in with a provider almost immediately. If the test is negative, our RNs educate them on how to manage their symptoms and encourage them to come back to the onsite health center if they don\u2019t improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following 10 features shared by USAA Health Services and others on the list can serve as a blueprint to achieve higher-quality care at lower cost:<\/p>\n<p>The practices are \u2018always on.\u2019<br \/>\nPatients have a sense that the practice is \u2018always on call,\u2019 and they can reach the care team quickly, whether the practice is open or closed.<\/p>\n<p>Physicians adhere to quality guidelines and choose tests and treatments wisely.<br \/>\nCare teams have systems to ensure patients receive evidence-based care and physicians are mindful of benefits, risks and patient preferences when ordering tests and treatments.<\/p>\n<p>They treat patient complaints as gold.<br \/>\nPractices actively solicit patient feedback, good and bad, to improve the patient experience.<\/p>\n<p>They in-source, rather than out-source, some needed tests and procedures.<br \/>\nCare teams do as many tests and procedures\u2014as can be done safely\u2014in-house, often with guidance from specialists.<\/p>\n<p>They stay close to their patients, even when referring them to specialists.<br \/>\nPhysicians refer to a select group of specialists they trust to act in their patients\u2019 interests and stay in close communication as care decisions are made.<\/p>\n<p>They close the loop with patients.<br \/>\nPractices actively follow up to ensure that patients are seen rapidly after hospitalizations, adhere to medications, and see specialists when needed.<\/p>\n<p>They maximize the abilities of staff members.<br \/>\nSupport is provided to physicians by a range of staff who are encouraged to perform at the \u2018top of their license.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>They work in \u2018hived\u2019 workstations.<br \/>\nOpen, \u2018bullpen-style\u2019 environments facilitate physician supervision and communication across clinical teams.<\/p>\n<p>They balance compensation.<br \/>\nPhysicians are not paid solely on volume of services or revenue they individually produce.<\/p>\n<p>They invest in people.<br \/>\nInvestment in staff is prioritized over space, equipment and technology.<\/p>\n<p>The other exemplary primary care practices named today include: Banner Health Clinic Internal Medicine (Phoenix, AZ); Baptist Medical Group, Memphis Primary Care (Memphis, TN); Family Physicians Group (Kissimmee, FL); Florida Medical Clinic Internal Medicine (Zephyrhills, FL); Northwest Family Physicians (Crystal, MN); Ridgewood Med-Peds (Rochester, NY); St. Jude Heritage Medical Group (Yorba Linda, CA); South Cove Community Health Center (Quincy, MA); SureCare Medical Center (Springboro, OH); and TriHealth West Chester Medical Group (West Chester, OH).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings challenge the belief that excellent primary care can only be provided by large healthcare organizations that are household names,\u201d said Arnold Milstein, MD, director of Stanford\u2019s Clinical Excellence Research Center. \u201cWe found un-sung physicians who are achieving something extraordinary\u2014much better quality at a lower cost.
