This is the second year the cost of health insurance has risen 7% for organizations, a growth rate not seen in more than a decade.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, what\u2019s driving up costs? A large chunk is driven b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y pharmacy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> increases. From 2021 to 2023, the median amount of healthcare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmadive.com\/news\/employers-healthcare-cost-growth-2025-pharmacy-glp1s\/724966\/#:~:text=The%20projection%20for%20a%20sharp%20increase%20next%20year,and%20Eli%20Lilly%2C%20is%20increasingly%20pressuring%20employer%20budgets.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">spend on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pharmacy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> rose from 21% to 27%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Unsurprisingly, these pharmaceutical costs are in large part due to the increased demand for GLP-1s to treat chronic diseases like diabetes and obesity. But trending GLP-1s aren\u2019t the only drugs driving up costs. Both cancer and musculoskeletal conditions remained the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessgrouphealth.org\/en\/newsroom\/news%20and%20press%20releases\/press%20releases\/2025%20employer%20health%20care%20strategy%20survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">top two cost drivers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with cardiovascular conditions as the third costliest.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These figures mean more employers need to boost early screenings among their employee population, as well as other preventive health measures such as increasing primary care visits. What resulted was many employees avoided going to the doctor altogether. But now, more organizations are recognizing that sharing costs has proven unsustainable for their employee populations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A growing number of large employers are taking tangible steps to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/report\/2024-employer-health-benefits-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">shield lower-wage workers from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> rising healthcare costs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> According to WTW\u2019s 2024 Best Practices in Healthcare Survey, more than half of employers surveyed (52%) plan to implement programs that will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtwco.com\/en-us\/news\/2024\/09\/healthcare-costs-at-a-post-pandemic-high-us-employers-prioritize-affordability-and-wellbeing#:~:text=WTW%27s%202024%20Best%20Practices%20in,2024%20and%206.5%25%20in%202023.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reduce total costs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and just as many (51%) intend to adopt plan design and network strategies that steer to lower-cost, higher-quality providers and sites of care. Only 34% expect to share costs with employees through premium contributions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advanced primary care is another solution employers are considering to reduce total costs without limiting healthcare access. This care model makes primary care the foundation, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premisehealth.com\/resources\/blog\/how-primary-care-reduces-costs-for-large-employers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">saves employers and their employees money<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/mental-health\/issue-brief\/exploring-the-rise-in-mental-health-care-use-by-demographics-and-insurance-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">23% of adults received mental health treatment<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, up from 19% in 2019. To meet this growing demand, an increasing number of organizations are focused on improving appointment access and eliminating cost barriers for those seeking mental an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d behavioral health <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">treatment. Over 76% of large employers in Mercer\u2019s National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/en-us\/insights\/us-health-news\/health-benefit-cost-expected-to-rise-54-in-2024-mercer-survey\/?size=n_20_n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">improving access to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> behavioral healthcare<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">will be a priority over the next few years, exploring options such as no- or low-cost virtual counseling, eliminating out-of-network barriers, and the use of onsite counselors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another solution is to integrat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e behavioral health <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">into primary care through an onsite or nearsite wellness center, a trend more employers are implementing into their benefit offerings. Research indicates that primary care physicians are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/behavioralhealthnews.org\/integrating-behavioral-health-into-primary-care-a-step-towards-holistic-and-equitable-patient-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ideally situated to identify and treat <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">behavioral health <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">needs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in a timely manner. When these two types of care are integrated in one convenient place, primary care physicians can connect patients directly to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">behavioral health s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ervices. This makes it easier for them to track how patients are doing and connect them to any extra resources they might need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Behavioral health<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/behavioralhealthnews.org\/integrating-behavioral-health-into-primary-care-a-step-towards-holistic-and-equitable-patient-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">integration with primary care<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can also encourage treatment adherence, improve symptoms, and lower healthcare costs. In a Premise study we found that when members attributed to both Premise primary care and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> behavioral health, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employers saved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/ck\/a?!&amp;&amp;p=81f2af28e7e89f8196d2efe2afcb2fa0be4a115cd17998917594bdd33017e815JmltdHM9MTczMDg1MTIwMA&amp;ptn=3&amp;ver=2&amp;hsh=4&amp;fclid=1023116c-1b4b-6877-216c-05831a1d69a7&amp;psq=2024+book+of+business+analysis+premise+health&amp;u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cucHJlbWlzZWhlYWx0aC5jb20vd3AtY29udGVudC91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjQvMTAvMjAyNC1Cb29rLW9mLUJ1c2luZXNzLUFuYWx5c2lzLnBkZg&amp;ntb=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">$5,377 per member per year<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2014 a substantial 48% reduction in total cost of care.
