Today, more than 30 million Americans live with diabetes, and it\u2019s estimated the number will rise to 44.1 million by 2034. Largely sparked by a set of well-known risk behaviors \u2013 poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and tobacco use \u2013 diabetes is costly when left unaddressed. Improving health for those living with diabetes and preventing onset for those at-risk should be priority for all. One in 7 healthcare dollars is spent treating the condition and associated complications. The total estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes has risen to $327 billion in 2017, up from $245 billion in 2012. Nearly half of the population receives health benefits through their employer, making employer-sponsored health plans the largest share of coverage nationwide. While it\u2019s overall positive that millions of Americans have access to coverage through their employers, they also bare the weight of rising costs. From increases in premiums to high-deductible health plans to prescription medications, employees living with diabetes face significant cost challenges. This is largely due to the costs of medication and doctors\u2019 visits for correlated health issues, such as high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels.
